Common, benign vascular skin growth or lesion that occurs on the surface of your skin.
What is it?
Angiomas are generally harmless (benign) growths composed of small blood or lymphatic vessels, characterized by their red or purple color. They are frequently observed in adults and are equally prevalent in both genders. In addition, they are also known to frequently occur during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Angiomas can appear anywhere on the body and are more prevalent in individuals with lighter skin tones. There are various types of angiomas, with spider angiomas and cherry angiomas being the most common. While the causes of many angiomas are unknown, some, like cherry angiomas, are attributed to aging and have no known significance.
Hemangiomas, also referred to as strawberry marks, are red or purple benign growths that are a form of birthmark composed solely of small blood vessels (excluding lymphatic vessels). They can appear anywhere on the body, with a higher tendency to appear on the face, chest, and back. Hemangiomas can appear from infancy through childhood and often fade away by the age of 10.
How is it treated?
Typically, angiomas and hemangiomas are harmless and tend to heal and resolve independently. However, there are instances where medical removal becomes necessary for aesthetic reasons, or if they begin to alter in color or shape, bleed or generally become bothersome. External influences, such as friction against clothing, may sometimes necessitate removal to prevent further complications. When treatment is deemed necessary, they can be eliminated using a laser or liquid nitrogen to eliminate the blood vessels and damaged cells. Both of these treatments cause minor discomfort and generally produce satisfactory cosmetic results.
While the majority of angiomas and hemangiomas are benign, it's important to have them inspected by a board-certified dermatologist to ensure they are not malignant.
