A common skin condition that causes a scaly rash on oily areas of the body like the face and scalp.
What is it?
Seborrheic dermatitis results in inflamed, scaly skin patches, commonly observed on the scalp. The blemishes can appear pink, purple or lighter than the nearby skin, often exhibiting a raised texture. This condition can also lead to persistent dandruff. Although it can be annoying, it is not infectious and does not cause lasting hair loss. Seborrheic dermatitis can also impact oily regions of the body, such as the face, nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids and chest. The signs and symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis usually intensify with stress, exhaustion or seasonal changes. In babies, this condition is also referred to as cradle cap.
How is it treated?
Regrettably, there's currently no definitive cure for seborrheic dermatitis. However, our dedicated team at Beavercreek Dermatology can effectively identify and manage dermatitis through medicated shampoos, which can reduce symptoms such as itchiness and potentially completely resolve the rash. Additionally, we might apply prescription-grade corticosteroid cream, foam, ointment or oil to the scalp or impacted areas. In case of seborrheic dermatitis, it's suggested to seek treatment promptly to prevent scale thickening or the risk of infection.
