What is it?

Shingles arise from the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is also responsible for chickenpox. This virus may reactivate many years after an individual has recovered from chickenpox. Shingles can trigger discomfort, itching or a tingling sensation in the affected region(s) where the rash appears - typically on the left or right sides of the body. In some instances, fever, headache and chills might manifest even before the rash is visible.

It's crucial to understand that the virus can be actively transmitted when blisters are present. If a person has not had chickenpox or received the vaccine, they can get chickenpox from someone with shingles. This is something our dermatologists in Beavercreek, Ohio, want you to be aware of.

How is it treated?

Although there is no established cure for shingles, our experienced team of dermatologists at Beavercreek Dermatology can contribute significantly to managing its progress through the prescription of antiviral drugs. These drugs can expedite your recovery and minimize your susceptibility to further complications. If you are suffering from a blistering rash, staring prescribed medication within two to three days of the rash's onset can dramatically alleviate your symptoms, shorten the duration of the breakout and reduce your risk of encountering other health issues. If you have been experiencing a rash for more than three days, it is advised to seek medical attention to prevent further complications. We understand that shingles can cause discomfort, and we are prepared to assist you so you can resume your routine activities without disruption.
