A common viral infection causing painful blisters or ulcers seen either around the mouth/face or genital area.
What is it?
Herpes is a common condition brought on by the herpes simplex viruses. There are two distinct forms of herpes: Herpes Simplex-1 (HSV-1) usually manifests as a cold sore or fever blister on your mouth or face. Herpes Simplex-2 (HSV-2), also referred to as genital herpes, impacts the genital region, resulting in sores often confused with pimples or ingrown hairs. This infection can be acquired through multiple sexual partners, unprotected sex, a compromised immune system or a history of sexually transmitted infections. Once acquired, it becomes a permanent condition that occurs sporadically. When these itching sores flare up, they can persist for up to 10 days.
How is it treated?
In the event of an outbreak, our medical team often diagnose herpes simplex just by examining the sores. At times, we may take a swab from a sore for laboratory testing to confirm the diagnosis. Although there is no definitive cure for herpes simplex, sores often resolve themselves without intervention. If treatment is deemed necessary, our dermatology professionals can prescribe antiviral ointments or creams such as acyclovir, famciclovir or penciclovir to help reduce the visibility and discomfort of herpes. It's crucial to begin treating the condition as soon as you notice the onset of an outbreak, to prevent the blisters from worsening.
While herpes is not a life-threatening condition and can be easily managed and alleviated, our dermatology clinic, serving Beavercreek, Ohio, can help mitigate the onset and symptoms before they start.
