Spider veins are damaged, visible blood vessels just beneath the skin’s surface that are red, blue or purple and have a “web-like” appearance.
What is it?
Spider veins often present themselves in clusters that resemble web-like or branch-like formations. They can appear anywhere, but are commonly found on the legs, feet or face. Although these veins are harmless, they can lead to swelling and a sensation of heaviness in the affected areas. Spider veins tend to be more prevalent in women than men and are often hereditary. Individuals who spend long periods sitting or standing, pregnant women and those with obesity are also more likely to suffer from spider veins due to poor circulation.
Spider veins come about when the valves within your veins weaken. Factors such as sunlight, hormonal changes, past vein surgery, overexposure to ultraviolet rays or an injury can also cause them.
In some cases, spider veins may indicate a more serious underlying health issue known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). The board-certified dermatologists at our Beavercreek Dermatology are well-equipped to determine if you are at risk for CVI. Our team can also provide aesthetic treatments for patients who are bothered by the appearance of spider veins.
