Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder causing patches of skin to lose their pigment due to melanocytes (pigment-making cells) being attacked and destroyed.
What is it?
Vitiligo is a persistent skin condition that results in patches of skin losing their color and turning a pale white due to a deficit of melanin - the skin's pigment. In simple terms, your skin starts to lose its usual color and results in white regions known as macules or patches. Macules are smaller than five millimeters, while patches exceed this size. Some vitiligo sufferers have even noticed their hair turning white in the affected areas. The condition primarily appears in individuals in their 20s, and initial signs generally appear on the face, arms, hands or feet. Over time, the condition typically advances, with additional skin areas losing pigmentation. Vitiligo can affect people of all skin tones, but the lighter skin patches tend to be more noticeable on darker or tanned skin.
At Beavercreek Dermatology, we have years of experience in diagnosing and treating vitiligo, whether it's localized in small areas or more generalized affecting multiple body parts. We have seen notable success in restoring skin color for many patients with the right treatment.
How is it treated?
In order to improve skin color conditions, one of our medical providers will tailor a plan based on your age, overall health, type of vitiligo, its location on your body, and how the condition is progressing.
Your treatment could involve medications and topical creams like corticosteroids, as well as light therapy, to manage skin discoloration. It's crucial to understand that effective vitiligo treatments take time and some individuals may require more intensive treatment to see improvements.
